05/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Blue was brought in with limited information on her behavior in her previous home. Her owner reports she would hiss at the other resident cat, her 3 children, and her husband. She appeared skittish and did not like loud sounds or movements, getting startled whenever the children played. She did not have any litter box issues, however. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Shy, tense, hissed a little when approached. Allowed all handling. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/18/17 Lying in litterbox with a low body, head lowered on to floor with and ears flat. Avoids eye contact when spoken to. Tolerates petting with flat ears while turning head to sniff bear-claw. Lowers head and curls body up tighter with continued petting. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Blue hisses and hunches over, becoming alert. Reaction when softly spoken to: Blue hisses again and starts to whine. She lip lick and grumbles while looking around. Reaction to cage door opening: Blue becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Blue sniffs the assessor’s hand and lowers her head. She accepts gentle petting on her head and closes her eyes, but after a few rubs she hisses and swipes the assessor’s hand multiple times without nails. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Blue has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Blue tolerates brief attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
