04/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Blanc was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Hissing and swatting in cage when approached use net to examine ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/18/17 Lying crouched with a low body in back of kennel. Ears flatten when I speak to him and body tenses. He backs away when I open the kennel door and ignores the treats I place in front of him. He hisses when I reach out to him and turns his body away, facing the corner of the kennel. 04/19/17 Lying with a low body in back of kennel, ears tilted. He makes eye contact when spoken to and body tenses as I approach. I attempt to pet him with the bear-claw and he stands up, body rigid. He hisses when the bear-claw touches him, raising his paw and moving his body forward while making eye contact with me. Not interested in further interaction today. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Blanc was pressed up against the back wall of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Blanc’s ears pin back and he hisses with an arched back. Reaction to cage door opening: Blanc moves away to the other side of the kennel. Reaction to touch: Blanc raises his body making himself as big as possible and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached. He seems very stressed and currently doesn’t allows any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Blanc has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Blanc is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
