Cage Condition:
Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:
Bello was tense and crouched on top his kuranda bed. His ears bent flat and he hisses when the assessor extends his hand out.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Bello’s whiskers fan out and he becomes hyper focused on the assessor’s movements.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Bello tenses up and arches his back.
Reaction to touch:
Bello hisses upon approach and leans away when the assessor extends his hand out. He flinches when touched, tolerates being pet with a slow approach and leaps down from his perch and shift away when he’s done interacting.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Laid back
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Skittish
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Inappropriate elimination
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Bello has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
Bello’s previous owners report that he was eliminating (urinating) outside the litter box for a few months. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Bello tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
