03/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Baylee was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. The finder reports she was living in a home with 12 other cats. All the cats appeared to do well together. She was very shy upon intake, but allowed handling and petting. She was also easy to handle during her initial medical exam. Reaction to assessor: Baylee was calm and relaxed and was lying down by the front. Reaction when softly spoken to: Baylee meows softly, gets up, and leans against the wall of the kennel. Reaction to cage door opening: Baylee becomes alert and retreats into her cubby. Reaction to touch: Baylee remains in her cubby and looks at the assessor. She leans on the cage wall again and shows interest, but does not come out to interact. She was hesitant and sniffs the assessor’s hand, but will shift away when hand is extended. She allows brief petting, but retreats and looks at the assessor’s hand. She lies down afterwards and rolls over, but starts to grumble as the assessor pets her. Behavior Determination: Experience Baylee initially solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to growl. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Baylee becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
