10/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Bana was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder reported he did not tolerate handling and would run away whenever they were near him. The finder was able to capture him and place him inside a box. He did not tolerate handling during intake and during his initial medical exam, displaying distance-increasing behaviors to avoid it. The enrichment facilitator reports he was stiff and alert when approached, focusing on them but also wary of his surroundings. He hisses whenever they extend their hand and attempts to hide. He tolerates petting, but appears extremely uncomfortable and will continue to hiss, shifting away to avoid contact. During clicker training, he became a little more confident and stopped hissing and growling after repeated touch, but was unwilling to come out from under his box. Reaction to assessor: Bana was resting inside his box upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Bana becomes alert and looks out from the box, blinks softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Bana retreats further into his box and hides. Reaction to touch: Bana hisses and shifts away in an attempt to avoid contact, but remains immobile and tolerates petting on his head and body. He hisses a few more times, but eventually stops and has a low body posture. Behavior Determination: Experienced, No Children Bana tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in a calm, quiet home with experienced cat parents and without children.
