*** SAFE 06/11/17 *** A volunteer writes: When I first met Austin he was a bit reserved, sitting in the back of the cage watching to see what my next move would be. Lucky for him, I was coming in to pet his head, which immediately put him at ease. He particularly love to get scratched right under his chin–once you get there he becomes a big softy! Another volunteer writes: Austin’s come a long way. The first time I met him he had just arrived at the shelter and was feeling a little scared. Now he’s relaxed and calm, and ready to lap up all the attention you have to give. He’s a handsome boy who’d enjoy a home where he can lounge in peace, but stay close to the center of action.

05/30/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Austin was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. The finder reports that he was shy for a few days but slowly relaxed and allowed handling. He’s never been around children, but has lived with one other male cat and was calm and relaxed. Austin is not litter-box trained and has accidents daily outside of the litter box, and will go pee on the bed. He doesn’t mind being picked up or being put in a carrier and was described as shy and independent and has a medium activity level. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Shy, ran off of table but allowed himself to be picked up. Allowed all handling. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Austin was lying down against the back wall of the kennel with his head resting on the port hole. Reaction when softly spoken to: Austin’s eyes widen, his ears rotate and he becomes focused on the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Austin is tense and wary. Reaction to touch: Austin appears hesitant of contact and slowly shifts his weight and leans away when the assessor extends his hand out. He closes his eyes and allows soft pets on his head with a slow approach. After a few minutes of contact he starts to open up and tilts his head allowing rubs on his cheek and along his body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Austin may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
