ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 01/08/18 Lying in back of kennel, body tense. Leans away and flattens ears when approached. Tolerates slow and gentle petting while lowering body to floor and whipping head back, tail curled around body. He steps right to the front of his kennel for treats. May respond well to clicker training. Needs some time to adjust. 01/09/18 Crouched in back of kennel, ears flat and body tense. Hisses when cage cover is lifted. He steps forward for treats so I click and reward each time he steps forward or smells my finger. Backs away and becomes too focused on environment when new person enters the room to continue clicker training. Needs some more time to adjust. 01/10/18 Hunched in front of kennel, eyes alert and ears forward. Tail begins to flick back and forth when I speak to him and he reaches out towards me as I open the kennel door. I click and reward each time he allows petting along his head and body. Does well during clicker training, leans in for petting. Very food motivated. Doing better!
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Astro has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Astro tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He will most likely need time to warm up to his new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
