Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Name and A#: Astor KNOWN HISTORY: Indoor and/or Outdoor? Left in carrier no known history available Litter box training: Y EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Laying with head out of cat den Reaction to assessor: Curious but did not come out Reaction when softly spoken to: Soft and relaxed Reaction to cage door opening: Lifted up head from cat den. Reaction to touch: Allowed assess-a-ahead to rub head and chin area: Would not leave den completely Reaction to being picked up: Would not allow ENRICHMENT NOTES: 3/1/17 In feral den, head poking out, eyes dilated, whiskers forward. Started lip licking when spoken to. Stuck head further out to sniff assess-a-hand and treats, but didn’t eat. Allowed and slightly leaned into pets, wouldn’t leave den. 3/2/17 In feral den on approach, occasionally peeking out. Sniffed hand, leaned enthusiastically into pets from inside of den. Came out very briefly after door closed, walked to other side of kennel, then went right back in MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: HISSING, GROWLING, TRIED TO BITE ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back, Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _X_ Fearful – Astor has displayed fearful behavior during his stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _X_ Experienced cat parent – Astor tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
