BEHAVIOR:
KNOWN HISTORY:
Arden was brought into our care center as a stray so we have no previous history available.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
07/09/18
Crouched in front of kennel, ears tilted and body tense. Tail is curled around feet. Tolerates slow and gentle petting along head and body while flattening ears further and making eye contact. Pupils are dilated. Tolerates a few more scratches behind the ears before nipping at my finger in warning (not enough pressure to break glove or skin). Nervous and unsure, needs time to adjust.Â
07/10/18
Under-socialized kitten. Hisses when approached, low body posture. Lip licks and breathes rapidly. Shrinks body when touched, turns head away trying to avoid eye contact. Wouldn’t come forward when coaxed with tuna/party mix. I was unable to towel wrap him. Needs more time to adjust.
07/11/18
Crouched in back of kennel with a tense body, tail curled around feet and eyes wide. Makes eye contact and shifts away when spoken to. He tolerates petting along his head and body briefly before retreating through his portal with a low body, tail tucked between legs. Nervous and unsure – needs more socialization. Accepts petting once touched but remains tense and uncomfortable. Not interested in treats today, may be too focused on me and environment.
07/12/18
Nervous, low body posture. Crouched inside the litter box, turns his head away when spoken to softly. Tolerates petting briefly before shifting away. Seems very uncomfortable. Wasn’t interested in treats. Tense body, struggles when towel wrapped. Needs more time to adjust.
07/14/18
Hiding inside his litter box. Flinches when the door opens. Starts breathing rapidly when approached, and lip licks when pet on his head. Very uncomfortable. Tolerates being wrapped up in a towel. Needs more time to adjust.

CHARACTER TYPE:

Skittish
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Arden has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
No young children
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Arden tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
