KNOWN HISTORY:
Apple was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on their behavior history or tendencies in a home environment. Around strangers Apple is very tense she will hiss, growl or swat if someone tries to approach her. Upon intake, Apple was displaying distance-increasing behavior so no handling was done to reduce stress.

Observed Behavior – very nervous, hisses, swats, tries to flee. Netted for exam.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
01/14/18
Lying in front of kennel, body low and tense and eyes wide. Pupils are dilated. She lowers her body further as I approach and swats the bear-claw out of the way before it can reach her. Retreats to back of kennel. Needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:
Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:
Apple was crouched over, looking around near the front.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Apple looks at the assessor with dilated eyes, her ears tilted slightly sideways.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Apple becomes stiff and alert.
Reaction to touch:
Apple slowly sits up and swats at the assessor’s hand when extended near her and hisses. She slowly backs away and lip licks, trying to avoid contact.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Moderate
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Shy
Timid
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful
Potential challenges comments:
Apple has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
New hope only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Apple is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
