Zorro lived with previous owner for about 8 years and was bought from a pet shop. Zorro was surrendered because his previous owner was moving in with a roommate who had allergies. Zorro has no injuries or health issues and has not been taken to the vet. Zorro wants to be your furever friend. Offer him a chance for a happy life by fostering or adopting. Hello, my name is Zorro. My animal id is #19502. I am a male brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 30-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Zorro is being placed at risk due to behavior. Zorrow is stressed in care center and should go to an adult only home where he will be allowed to acclimate at his own pace. there are no medical concerns for Zorro at this time.

Upon intake, Zorro had a tense body but allowed me to pet him on the head inside of his carrier. Zorro also allowed me to collar him inside of his carrier. Zorro remained tense as I pulled him out of his carrier and picked him up and placed him into his kennel. Once inside, Zorro retreated to the back of the kennel and did not move.

How is this cat around strangers?: Zorro is shy for a few minutes. Zorro will eventually approach strangers and sniff them and with allow to be petted sometimes.
How is this cat around children?: Zorro has interacted with children aged 9 and 10 years old. Zorro is described as being relaxed and will allow the children to pet him.
How is this cat around other cats?: Zorro has never interacted with cats
How is this cat around dogs?: Zorro has never interacted with dogs
Behavior Notes: During car rides, Zorro is sleeping or relaxed. Zorro struggles when being bathed and will try to escape. Zorro is not bothered when his nails are trimmed, his coat is brushed, when he is picked up and held or when being put into a carrier. Zorro has never been disturbed as he sleeps.
Bite history:: Zorro has never bitten another animal or human.

For a New Family to Know: Zorro is an affectionate, shy and talkative cat. When at home, Zorro will follow you around. Zorro was kept as an indoors only cat and was fed wet food twice a day. Zorro is litter box trained and used an uncovered box with corn based cat litter. Zorro had a scratching post made out of wool.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 1/30/18 Observed Behavior -scared, allows exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/8/18 Eyes wide open and pupils dilated, sitting upright in his cage cubby during the approach. He slowly sniffs the hand and retreats. During the attempt to pet he gently paws the hand to stop the interactions.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Zorro remains tense, crouched position hiding at the back of the cage cubby during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Zorro becomes alert with eyes wide open, pupils dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Zorro began to lip lick and stiffen up in place.
Reaction to touch:: Zorro sniffs the assessor’s hand then slowly increases distance while body remains stiff with tail tightly curled close to the body. He began to low growl while accepting the touch with no interest towards the interaction.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Zorro tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
