KNOWN HISTORY:: Zesar was brought into our care center as a stray so we have no previous history available.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/09/18 fearful, hissing, unable to fully exam.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/11/18 Standing in back of kennel, body slightly tense and ears forward. Pupils are dilated. He lowers his body as I reach towards him with the assessor hand and tolerates petting along his head and body while leaning in very gently. He stands up with continued petting and walks through his portal, tail lowered. Curious but unsure, has potential to warm up. 02/12/18 Steps forward curiously as I approach, pupils dilated and ears forward. Body is soft and tail is low. Allows petting along head and body while leaning in slightly, then backing away. Curious but unsure – makes eye contact with soft eyes and face. Not interested in treats at the moment, smells treats I place down but won’t eat them. Needs some more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Zesar is standing upright in the back of his kennel, body slightly tense and pupils dilated as the assessor approaches. Ears are forward.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Zesar makes eye contact when spoken to softly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Zesar lowers his body slightly as the cage door opens.
Reaction to touch:: Zesar tolerates petting along his head and body while lowering his body further. He leans in gently, then turns his head to smell the assessor’s hand with his tail lowered. He then walks through his portal, tail and body low.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Zesar has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Zesar tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
