A1120607 Xena – NHO determination; Xena’s previous owner reports she is friendly and likes to walk around strangers, but she appears very uncomfortable in the shelter environment. She focuses on the assessor when approached and becomes extremely tense. She does not allow contact at this time and will use her paws to bat the assessor’s hand when petting is attempted.

08/02/17 13:17 Basic Information: Xena is a 1 year old unaltered female domestic shorthair. She was given as a gift to owner when she was a couple weeks old. She appears healthy and has no health concerns. Owner surrenders Xena due to moving. Socialization: Xena lived with multiple adults and never been around children. Owner stated Xena is friendly and likes to walk around when visitors come around. Recently she has been in heat and will become rough when she’s touch owner states. Her behavior is unknown when it comes to other animals. She’s indoors only and activity level is very high due to climbing on everything. Owner describes Xena as friendly and independent. Behavior: Xena has never bitten but has scratched when overly aroused within the past two months. Further information in behavior memo. Owner stated Xena has been spraying outside the litter box for the past two months. She likes to take baths and go inside the tub. She struggles when picked up and held but allows putting sometimes when she approaches owner. Owner stated she eats paper especially from the cleaners. For a New Family to Know: Xena is trained to use the bathroom in an uncovered litter box. She likes to sleep on bed, play with balls and curtains. She has a scratching post made out of rough rope and carpet. She eats dry food and knows command down and she will lay down. Upon intake: Xena was hissing, growling, and swatting. She scanned negative for a microchip and allowed limited handling.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: adults only Behavior toward strangers: friendly and likes to walk around when visitors come around Behavior toward children: none Bite or Scratch history: yes, when overly aroused in the past 2 months. Litter box training: yes Energy level/descriptors: very high Other notes: Described friendly and independent. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 8/3/17 Resting in litter box, eyes dilated, tense and alert. Meow-whined when door opened. Sniffed assess-a-hand, tolerated very brief pets, then yowled, hissed and swatted. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Xena remains tense, sitting upright turned sideways at the back during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Xena remains in place, alert with eyes wide open, ears erect and forward. Reaction to touch: Xena seems curious while she sniffs the assessor’s hand then slowly withdrawals. When attempted to touch, she starred at the hand and began to lip lick while raising her front leg and repeatedly paws (no claws) at the hand to stop the interaction. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Xena is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
