09/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Wolverine was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fractious, netted and sedated for exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/12/17 Lying in back of kennel with a tense body, ears flattened. He tolerates petting along his head and body while licking his lips and backing away, tail wrapping around his body. Uncomfortable – needs more time to adjust. 09/13/17 Lying in back of kennel. Growls and flattens ears when I lift cage cover. Body arches and fur rises along back as I speak to him. Pupils are dilated. Very fearful. I push some treats towards him as he continues to growl, but he’s not interested in eating them today. Limited interaction due to stress. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Wolverine was tense and alert at the back of the cage. Reaction when softly spoken to: Wolverine’s ears pin back, he arches his back, the hair along his back pilo-erect and he hisses when spoken to softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Wolverine continues to hiss and is hyper focused. Reaction to touch: Wolverine is very vocal, quickly strikes, displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Wolverine has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Wolverine is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
