06/15/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Winter A1115106 is at risk due to behavior. She warmed up to her caretakers and is social, soliciting attention by the front. She leans in for petting and appreciates rubs on her head, but will get agitated and swat and nip when touched along her body. She appears to have a low threshold for contact on those areas, but is otherwise social and demanding of attention.

06/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Shy for a few minutes but will warm up. Behavior toward children: Spent time around children all ages and she is relaxed and affectionate. Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: She has spent time around a small Chihuahua and she was relaxed and affectionate. Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly affectionate, playful and shy with a medium activity level. Other notes: She enjoys being brushed and isn’t bothered when held, put in the carrier or disturbed while she is sleeping. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Seemed friendly, tailed raised, but tried to bite and swat with little warning a few times ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/13/17 At front of kennel, head-butting kennel door. He hisses when I attempt to unlock his door and begins to stress meow. He tolerates petting along his head while whipping his head around to watch the bear-claw pass along his back, mouth open. He backs away and swats softly with continued petting, then rushes forward after the bear-claw when I pull it away. Needs more time to adjust. 06/14/17 At the front of the kennel, reaching out towards me with soft paws. He head-butts my hand when I pen the kennel door. I clicker train and reward him every time he head-butts my hand or allows petting along his head and body. Did well today! Food motivated, remained relaxed during this session. Hissed once when he looked up and noticed Vadar. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Winter is very vocal and comes forward immediately to greet the assessor. Reaction when softly spoken to: Winter continues meowing and is constantly rubbing her body against the cage door. Reaction to cage door opening: Winter is calm and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Winter sniffs then leans her head in for petting and cheek rubs. She seems to prefer being pet on her head, and is constantly nudging the assessor for attention. When the assessor touched her along her body she quickly whipped around, swatted and bit the assessor’s hand. It appears that repeated physical contact along her body results in discomfort. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Athletic VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER: Social, Demanding
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Pet-induced aggression – Initially Winter solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss, swat and bite at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Winter becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Winter solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents and any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction.
