Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults, a two year old child, and another female cat Behavior toward strangers: Very shy and will hide until they leave Behavior toward children: Not very tolerant, will swat and move away when toddler came close Behavior toward cats: Respectful and tolerant Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Yes, uses an uncovered litter box with clumping clay Energy level/descriptors: Willoughby is described as a mellow and shy cat with a medium activity level. Other notes: She loves to hang around the living room and watch birds outside the window. She is not tolerant of any handling and will swat when picked up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior -examined through restraint net, very unhappy EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Willoughby meows and approaches the front to head-butt cage door. Reaction when softly spoken to: Willoughby continues to rub on the cage door. Reaction to cage door opening: Willoughby becomes alert, but remains by the front. Reaction to touch: Willoughby sniffs the assessor’s hand and head-butts. She accepts gentle petting all over her body, but the base of her tail and body starts to pilo-erect. She tenses up at times, but continues to rub against the assessor. She appears wary of her surroundings and will hiss with sudden commotion, but doesn’t seem to mind attention. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Affectionate POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Overstimulation – Willoughby is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before she becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult only home – Willoughby tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need time to warm up to her new home and family. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
