06/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Willi was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on his behavior in his previous home. He was alert and nervous upon intake, but he allowed the counselors to handle him. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Nervous, started lip licking and hyper salivating on approach, began hissing and swatting when attempting to remove from cage, brief exam done in net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/18/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body, ears tilted. He comes forward to sniff treats but does not eat them. He tolerates petting along head and body while turning head to watch the bear-claw with flat ears and hissing multiple times. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Willi was lying down by the back, alert upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Willi focuses on the assessor and his ears tilt sideways. Reaction to cage door opening: Willi lowers his body and becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Willi lies flat and backs up into the back corner, seeming to make himself as small as possible. He hisses and begins to growl as the assessor extends their hand. When attempting to pet, he hisses and swats. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a Rescue Partner – Willi is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
