White Rice’s previous owner reports he has lived with children and is relaxed and gentle around them. He allows them to pet him, but would retreat to another part of the house after. He is friendly towards strangers and also allows petting. He lived with his siblings and played and slept with them. He was described as mellow, friendly, and independent. Reaction to assessor: White Rice was calm and relaxed by the front. Reaction when softly spoken to: White rice meows loudly and solicits attention by rubbing against the cage door. Reaction to cage door opening: White Rice remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: White Rice head-butts, begins to purr, and leans in for petting. He rolls over and is very affectionate throughout the interaction. Reaction to pick up: White Rice remains calm and allows handling. White Rice’s previous owner reports he has a habit of spraying on objects inside the home, on the new baby furniture and on clothes. He has been altered, but the owners report he is still spraying after the surgery. There could be multiple reasons to why he may be displaying this behavior, but it is our understanding that spraying of objects is usually a sign of stress and is often associated with a change in the household. We have noticed White Rice using his litter box during his stay in the care center, but we advise any potential adopter to be prepared for this behavior and prepared manage it if it appears in a future home. Methods of managing and attempting to modify this behavior can be discussed with the Adoption Counselors. Placement Determination: Average White Rice interacts with the observer, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. Although this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new cat parents, due to the information provided to us by his previous owners, we recommend he goes to a home with adopters with some experience with cats.
