02/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Whiskey was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. The counselor was unable to handle him during intake and believes he may be feral. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: WILL FLEE – took first (and second) opportunity to run away, ran ALL around the room and jumped up as high as he could. Examined in net. He escaped again when net was opened for a better visual exam. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/13/17 Hunched in place, seems unsure. Retreated slowly when door opened, held immobile when touched. 2/15/17 Cage furnishings largely destroyed. Crouched at the back, behind bedding. Head down, eyes dilated and darting on approach. Held eye contact while pet, no other response. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat. Reaction to assessor: Whiskey was inside a den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Whiskey does not respond and remains still inside his den. Reaction to cage door opening: Whiskey remains immobile. Reaction to touch: Whiskey crouches over and appeared extremely tense as the assessor turns the den around to get a better view of him. His eyes dart around from the assessor to his surroundings, but he remains immobile when touched gently. He starts to breathe rapidly, but no other reaction was displayed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Whiskey has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has repeatedly attempted to escape and flee with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home only – Whiskey tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
