SAFE 3/22/17 A volunteer writes: Wayne reminds me of Bruce Wayne, Batman’s alter ego. He is a little shy, but give him treats and he will be your best friend! He has such beautiful yellow eyes. They seem to look into your soul. So if soulful and loving then Wayne can be your forever super hero. Come to the Manhattan Animal Care Center and take Wayne the super hero to be your forever friend.
A staff member writes: Wayne head-butts as soon as he is touched. After a moment, he comes forward to interact, leaning in and rubbing. He is very motivated by treats and is very sweet, but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

Behavior Note:
Wayne was initially very fearful when first brought to the care center. He kept a low body posture and mostly stayed hidden. He was hesitant of contact, but after a few interactions he started to open up and was willing to explore outside of the cubby, meowing softly for attention. He has been in the care center for about a month, and a staff member recently reported he swatted at them during an interaction and hissed. Behavior has been interacting with him and he is still hesitant of initial contact, but seems to warm up when approached slowly. He would lean in for cheek rubs, but suddenly becomes tense and shifts away. When pulling hands away, he swipes without using nails and lip licks. He has continued to do this with each interaction and his tolerance for petting seems to be getting shorter with each interaction. We feel that it is in Wayne’s best interest to move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible.
KNOWN HISTORY:
Wayne was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder reports he would attempt to flee when trying to place him into a carrier. He tried to evade capturing, but did not display any signs of aggression. Wayne was vocal during intake, but allowed the counselor to handle him.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Meows, sits in one place, allows all handling
EVALUATION:
Cage Condition: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor: Wayne was lying down, calm and relaxed.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Wayne makes eye contact but his ears tilt slightly to the side. He later backs away slightly and appeared unsure.
Reaction to cage door opening: Wayne becomes alert and looks around.
Reaction to touch: Wayne sniffs the assessor’s hand and retreats into his cubby. He curls up by the back and accepts petting, but his ears tilt sideways and his body is tense. He meows softly still seemed unsure, but tolerated all petting and relaxed a little.
Reaction to being picked up: Wayne was tense during pick up, but allows handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate

CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Calm

ENRICHMENT:
Wayne was calm and relaxed, but meows softly when approachd and appeared unsure of interaction. He accepts petting on his head and his eyes soften, but he meows when touched along his body. Did some clicker training, he is very motivated by treats! I rewarded each time I pet him and he continued to warm up and relax, head-butting my hand and arching his back after a few repetitions. He allowed longer and longer petting intervals and did very well! Will continue to clicker train.
Much calmer upon approach, meowing and making eye contact. He was still slightly hesitant of contact, but he head-butts as soon as he is touched. After a moment, he comes forward to interact, leaning in and rubbing. He still keeps a low body posture, but he slowly lifts his tail and and is very sweet.
03/16/17
Meowing upon approach, coming out of his cubby and rubbing against his cage door. He is still hesitant when extending my hand, but allows rubs and leans in for cheek rubs. He swatted my arm (without nails) once and stress meowed when I was rubbing on his head and backed away. When I closed the cubby door, he approached the front again and meowed multiple times. Decided to leave him alone for now.
Revisited and he looks at me and meows. I offered him my hand slowly and he doesn’t lean forward or push against my hand until contact is made. He pushes up, but will pull away again. Did some clicker training, rewarding each time I touched him. He seemed to be warming up slightly, but mostly stayed crouched over and tense.
03/21/17
An employee was interacting with Wayne, speaking softly to him and extending her hand very slowly for him to sniff. He was hesitant, but head-butted lightly when touched. He leaned in slightly for cheek rubs, but suddenly backed away and became tense. She understood that was his cue to end interaction, but as she was pulling her hand away he swiped her hand with nails. He blinks and lip licks after.
Revisited and was able to pet him with a slow approach. He shifts away after a few strokes and swipes at my hand as I was offering him some treats. He ate the treats when offered, but I ended the interaction.
