**SAFE 09/14/17*** WILL WANDY FIND A HERO TONIGHT? WANDY came in with a group of cats from a home with “too many” – and probably where she never got any one-on-one attention. Her pal Mew is also listed tonight. Now she is nervous and frightened in the shelter after having her entire world turned upside down and needs help now. WANDY is only a year old kitten. MUST RESERVE THROUGH A NEW HOPE RESCUE BY NOON!!

08/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tries to flee, tried to bite initially then froze ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/23/17 Lying in litter box with a low body, ears flat. Tolerates petting along head and body while backing away, arms and body stiff. Needs more time to adjust. 08/24/17 Lying in back of litter box with a low, tense body. Ears are flat. She tolerates petting briefly before swiftly sitting upright and swatting the bear-claw away, hissing. Not interested in further interaction at the moment. Not interested in treats right now. 08/25/17 Tense, curled up tight on top her kuranda bed. Ear bend completely flat, starts breathing more rapidly when I tried coaxing her forward. She keeps her head low, lip licks and looks around, scanning her surroundings. She flinches when the door opens then arches her back. She hissed and struck the assess-a-hand when I tried interacting with her. Very fearful and isn’t tolerant of any handling. Sprayed feliway and left some treats by the front of the cage. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Wandy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Wandy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
