02/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Vero was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder found him in a basement and was able to trap him inside a cat carrier. He was very tense and had a stiff body during intake, retreating from the counselor’s hand when extended. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Very tense, growled, tried to flee, swatting EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat. Reaction to assessor: Vero was inside a den, tense upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Vero looks out from the holes on the side of the den, but starts to growl after. Reaction to cage door opening: Vero remains inside the den, stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Vero focuses on the assessor’s hand, but would slowly lean forward to sniff it. He allows gentle petting with a slow approach, but would shift away and lip lick. His eyes remain wide and would look around his surroundings, appearing cautious. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Vero has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced, adult home – Vero tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
