04/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Turtle was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was trapped in his finder’s backyard. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Striking , trying to bite, ears back ENRICHMENT NOTES: 4/19/17 In feral den since intake, eyes dilated, very stiff posture. Retreated to back of den when door opened. Hissed and struck assess-a-hand very hard when offered treats, reaching out of den to do so. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Turtle was lying down inside his den, looking out from the opening and appeared calm and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Turtle’s eyes squints and he blinks repeatedly. Reaction to cage door opening: Turtle becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Turtle focuses on the assessor’s hand and growls. He does not allow touch; he hisses and swats from inside his den and retreats further inside to hide. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot assess VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Turtle is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
