***SAFE 05/16/17**** A JERSEY GIRL IS A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS TONIGHT! TRENTON and pal HOBOKEN were brought in by someone who “found” her in a yard, scooped her up and whisked her to the shelter. TRENTON NEEDS AN EXPERIENCED PURRSON TO HELP HER COME OUT OF HER SHELL – MUST BE PULLED BY A NEW HOPE RESCUE!
Given time to relax, explore on her own, and warm up at her own pace, this young kitty may open up to people and become more social. Trenton has displayed distance-increasing behaviors during her stay at the Brooklyn Care Center, and because of this reason the Enrichment department feels it would benefit her most to be placed with a New Hope partner prior to placement in an adopter’s home.

05/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Trenton was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Fractious, will not allow handling – hissing, striking, biting EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Trenton was curled tight in her litter box with her head lowered. Reaction when softly spoken to: Trenton watches the assessor with wide eyes and remains completely immobile. Reaction to cage door opening: Trenton flinches and his eyes dart around. Reaction to touch: Trenton starts to breathe rapidly when the assessor extends his hand out. Her ears bend flat, she lip licks and she shifts away, dodging the assessor. She seems very uncomfortable and presses her body up against the back wall of the kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Trenton has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Trenton is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
