*** SAFE 11/21/17 *** 8 year old TORA was brought in by someone who said their elderly parents can no longer care for their cat. Gee you’d think they would have offered? TORA is already spayed and she is sad and upset that her world has been turned upside down. Can someone offer TORA a home for the holidays?

Hello, my name is Tora. My animal id is #12389. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- owner elderly.
Tora is at risk for behavioral concerns. Tora is not thriving in the shelter, she is hiding in her den and refusing food. She hisses upon approach but has not demonstrated otherwise aggressive tendencies. Tora has been deemed suitable for an experienced cat home only.

N History : owner surrender b/c elderly parents can no longer care for cat Subjective: BAR Observed Behavior – in back of carrier, hissing when out, able to perform exam but unable to get blood / do microchip d/t hissing/scratching and difficulty restraining Evidence of Cruelty seen – N Evidence of Trauma seen – N Objective T = DNP P = WNL R = WNL BCS 6/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: 2/4 tartar PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Tense but nn painful, no masses palpated U/G: Spayed female (reported) MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, mildly matted haircoat; overweight CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: DNP Assessment: overweight, otherwise apparently healthy older female spayed cat Prognosis: good Plan: ok for placement, rec weight loss SURGERY: Permanent waiver due to already spayed.

Tora had a stiff disposition and drooled a lot but allowed petting. She also allowed to be collared, photographed and placed in a kennel.

Basic Information:: Tora is a brown tabby and white female cat that was surrendered due to owner’s heath reasons. Owner got her from a friend when she was a kitten and had her for eight years. Tora had no visible sign of illness or injuries

Behavior Notes: Tora is generally well behaved and meowed while riding in a car. She isn’t bothered if her nail is trimmed or coat brushed. She isn’t bothered if picked up and held but would struggle if held for too long. She isn’t bothered if placed in carrier or disturbed while sleeping.

For a New Family to Know: Tora is a friendly, affectionate and confident cat. She is a lovable cat that loves to eat and lounge in a cool area all day. She follows you around the home and would be in the same room with you. She loves to play with balls and stuffed toys, was kept indoors only and slept wherever was cool and cozy–mostly on owner’s bed and couch. She was fed both dry and wet food all day and gets a snack at 9:00 am daily. She used a hooded litter box with crystals cat litter and scratched on a wood with bark-type scratching post.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – in back of carrier, hissing when out, able to perform exam but unable to get blood / do microchip d/t hissing/scratching and difficulty restraining
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/13/17 In den, peeking out from side window, eyes fully dilated. Started hissing and lip licking when door opened. Left alone for now. Sprayed thunderease. 11/14/17 Curled up in den, eyes dilated, unwilling to come out. Lay in place when touched, started hissing. No other response. Sprayed thunderease.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Tora looks tense, crouched position hiding in the cat den during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Tora becomes alert with eyes dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Tora remains immobile in place.
Reaction to touch:: Tora accepts the touch, but stiffens up in place and shows no interest with the interaction.

VOCAL:: Quiet

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Tora may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
