03/21/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/21/17 14:30 Basic information: Toby is a 11 month old male domestic short hair mix. The owner surrendered Toby because his behavior towards the children has become unpredictable. Toby has no health problems and the owner has not taken him to a vet. Socialization: The owner states that around strangers Toby is somewhat shy but friendly Toby has lived with children between the ages of 7 and 10 years old however Toby does not like to interact with the children had he may swat at them. Toby has not lived with other pets. Toby has never bitten anyone but has attempted to scratch the children and the owner for no apparent reason. Behavior: Toby has never been bathed, had his nails trimmed. He does not mind having his coat brushed but hates being picked up and being placed in a cat carrier (he will struggle and swat the person). For a new family to know: The owner describes Toby shy and fearful cat with a medium activity level. Toby has played with rubber ball and string cat toys; he lives mostly indoors and sleeps anywhere in the house that he wants. In the home Toby will wonder around the house and rarely seeks attention. Pickles eats kibbles and bits brand dry cat food and is open feed. He is litter box trained and uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter. Toby has never been given a scratching post so the owner does not know if he will use it or not. Behavior during intake: During intake Toby was very tense with stiff body, he did not allow us to scan (-) put on collar, photographed and placed in cat kennel. Toby would growl hiss and attempt to attack the handler.

03/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Name and A#:Toby- A#1106281 Date: 3/24/2017 KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 1 Adult, 2 children Behavior toward strangers: Shy Behavior toward children: intolerate per owner Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: unknown Bite or Scratch history: None Litter box training: Y Observed Behavior – unapproachable without net ENRICHMENT NOTES: 3/22/17 Extremely tense, and aggravated. Sitting at the front of the cage, eyes fully dilated. Began hissing, screaming, striking between bars on approach. Responded well to quiet talking and slow blinking. Eventually calmed down and dozed off in litter box. Later, repeatedly came to the front for treats. Sitting on top of den, behind Quiet Time cover. Hissed and growled when I approached and continued when I lifted the cover. Interested in Blue Buffalo Kitty Yum treats, jumped down and ate the treats I threw. I re-approached while he was near the front of the kennel, he continued growling but watched me toss more treats in and continued sniffing/eating them as they landed in the cage. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: came out of cat den Reaction when softly spoken to: Was neutral and calm Reaction to cage door opening: Starting rubbing head against kennel door Reaction to touch: Allowed all Assess-a-hand interaction but not gloved hand of assessor Reaction to being picked up: Will not allow ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Toby has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only Toby solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. He may also be fearful or stressed in the shelter. Due to his tendency to allow limited interactions, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
