***GONE 03/31/17*** Timmy is one handsome kitty with a beautiful cream-colored tabby coat and adorable pink nose, but unfortunately he’s quite tense in the shelter environment. This young guy would benefit from placement with a New Hope partner where his behavior can be further assessed in a more relaxing environment. TIMMY NEEDS RESCUE BY NOON!! CAME IN WITH NOONA – A1107065 WHO IS ALSO LISTED TONIGHT.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Timmy was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Cat is Q/BAR at back of cage, eyes dilated, shys away from assess-a-hand but no attempts to bite/scratch/flee at first, when vet put hand in cage slowly to let cat sniff he swatted at hand and ran out of cage. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/27/17 Lying down by the back, tense. Eyes dart around, he seems unsure, but he blinks when spoken to. Remains very still when hand is extended, but will bolt to other side when petting is attempted and crouches over. Very tense. sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No Change Reaction to assessor: Timmy was curled up tight in his litter box with his tail wrapped at his side. Reaction when softly spoken to: Timmy’s ears rotate and his eyes widen when spoken to softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Timmy flinches and becomes alert. Reaction to touch: Timmy shifts around the kennel looking for an exit and pauses when the assessor extends his hand forward. He lip licks then quickly darts forward trying to escape the kennel and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Timmy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Timmy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
