***SAFE 04/07/16 *** TAIPAN has been DUMPED, after being with his owners since he was 2 months old, for the same ‘ol “allergies” excuse! He’s 9 years old and one would think he wouldn’t get along well in the shelter, but this AVERAGE rated guy interacted with the observer,and was easy to handle. So he seems to be a perfect fit for most any family! Offer to FOSTER or ADOPT TAIPAN before it too late for you…and him!

I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 03/24/2016 from NY 11213, owner surrender reason stated was ALLERGIES.

03/24/16 20:09 Taipan is a nine year old black and white male domestic shorthair. He was surrendered due to a family member’s allergy. He was with his family since he was two months old and is described as mellow, quiet, and affectionate. Socialization: Taipan has lived with one adult and two children, a four year old and a teenager. Around strangers he is described as friendly and solicits petting and engages in gentle play. Around children he is relaxed and respectful. Owner stated the four year old would play rough with Taipan and he would retreat and if the child continued he would lightly swat the child and would not hiss or have his nails out. With the teenager he was relaxed and would follow him around the home. He lived with two small breed dogs and is described as relaxed and tolerant towards the dogs. He has never lived with other cats. Behavior: Taipan will scratch at the mattresses in the home; owner did not provide a scratching post. In care rides he is relaxed and quiet. Taipan will use the toilet as well as the litterbox. Owner stated he will urinate in the toilet as well as the bathroom drain. She stated he prefers to use the toilet for urine and will defecate inside his box. He was bathed since he was a kitten but owner stated the older he got the more he struggled so owner stopped bathing altogether. His nails were not trimmed and he was not brushed by owner. He does not like to be placed in a carrier and will struggle. He is not bothered when he is held. For a new family to know: Taipan has been kept only indoors and likes to follow his owner around the home. Owner stated he loves affectionate and can be found in someone’s bed ready to cuddle. He eats wet and dry food Fancy feast seafood flavor and is fed twice a day. He is litterbox trained as well as toilet trained. He uses and uncovered litterbox and crystals litter. Owner believes Taipan will do best in a loving home, without small children where he can get all the attention. Upon intake Taipan was calm and relaxed. He allowed all handing. Counselor was able to collar, scan (negative) and photograph.

Reaction to Assessor: Taipan is calm and relaxed upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Taipan meows and leans on his blanket. Reaction to cage door opening: Taipan remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Taipan leans into petting, begins to purr, and head-butts lightly. He meows when petting stops. Reaction to being picked up: Taipain remains calm and allows handling. Placement Determination: Average Taipan appears to have acclimated well into the care center environment. He interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat owners. Date: 03/29/16 Taipan has lived with one adult and two children. Around strangers he is described as friendly and solicits petting. Taipan engages in gentle play. Around children he is relaxed and respectful. The four year old would play rough with Taipan and he would retreat. If the child continued he would lightly swat the child and would not hiss or have his nails out. With the teenager he was relaxed and would follow him around the home. Reaction to assessor: Taipan was at the back of the cage watching the assessor with wide eyes When spoken quietly: Taipan was at the back of the cage watching the assessor with wide eyes Reaction to door cage opening: Taipan remains motionless Reaction to touch: Taipan was tense but allowed petting Try picking cat up: Did not attempt Behavior Determination: Experience No Child At the time of the assessment Taipan was displaying fearful behavior; does not seek attention from the assessor and becomes alert when the kennel was open. Remains motionless as I started to get closer. I was able to pet him and interact with him in a limited way. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents with no children.
