07/13/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Social, Demanding, Independent MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/5/17- Observed Behavior – interactive, likes getting pet; allows handling but started swishing tail with added restraint ENRICHMENT NOTES: 07/06/17 Soft and relaxed upon approach, rolling on her back and rubbing against the cage door. She accepted petting, leaning in and purring loudly. However after a few strokes, she started to rub against staff’s hand vigorously. She grabbed the hand after with her mouth and was gnawing on the hand, applying adequate pressure. Her tail was not swishing during this time and when the hand was removed, she gently moved to the back of the kennel and watched the assessor, alert. **Update: While nipping on the staff’s hand, she broke skin and left small lesions. Revisited her and she readily approaches the front, curious. She sniffs the bear claw and head-butts hard. She leans in hard for cheek rubs, rolls over, and seems to really appreciate attention however her tail becomes pilo-erect. Her becomes focused on the claw when touched along her back and nipped once, but continued to lean in for rubs and attention. Resting in middle of cage, soft eyes and body. Started rolling over, rubbing against the bars, and kneading the air on approach. Seems conflicted. Occasionally became tense, swatted between bars. Stood when door opened, grabbed and bit assess-a-hand. Possibly rough play? No vocalizing. Then rolled over and leaned enthusiastically into pets, closed eyes, kneaded air. 07/09/17 Greets by the front and head-butts. Allows petting on her head and body, but the her fur begins to pilo-erect and she flips her head back to nip the assessor’s hand, chewing hard! She will continue to solicit attention after, but will bite whenever her tail is touched. She doesn’t seem to mind head rubs though. 7/10/17 Came to the front when given toys, soft eyes and body. Started rubbing against and reaching gently between the bars. Eyes became briefly dilated when door opened, nipped assess-a-hand, then softened again. Head-butted and leaned into pets, rolled over. After a while, tail became piloerect, started nipping again. Sprayed feliway. 7/11/17 Laying on top of kuranda bed, soft eyes and body. Lay in place when door opened, started head-butting and leaning enthusiastically into pets, rolled over, kneaded the air. Only nipped once today, seemed to be rough play.
7/12/17 Resting on kuranda bed, soft eyes and body. Immediately started head-butting and leaning into pets. Patted assess-a-hand gently, nipped twice, seemed to be rough play again. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Tacoma remains neutral, lying down on her cage bedding during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Tacoma stands with tail up (piloerection), alert with soft eyes, softly meowing attention. Reaction to touch: Tacoma began to roll over, head bunt the assessor’s hand then quickly nips and grabs with her forelimbs. She quickly releases the hand then continues to solicit attention and purrs while she allows the petting. As soon as you close the cage door, she gets up by the front then paws (claws not exposed) at the hand and randomly hisses with eyes dilated. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Initially Tacoma solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to nip and grab with her forelimbs at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Tacoma becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
