09/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Swoop was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Sweet in the cage but hissed when picked up. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/10/17 Lying curled up and relaxed in litterbox. She lifts her head when I wake her and allows petting along her head and body. Stands up and raises her tail with continued petting, ears remain forward and she makes eye contact with soft eyes. 09/11/17 Reported to have been low growling. She’s crouched in her cubby, eyes alert and ears forward. She allows petting along her head and body, leaning in initially, and then becoming tense. Pupils are pinpoint small, then become dilated. She backs away from the bear-claw and lowers her head to the ground in an attempt to avoid touch. Begins to lean in again, then raises her paw. Conflicted behavior. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Swoop was relaxed and meowing softly at the front of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Swoop rolls over on her side, starts to knead and reaches out with paws. Reaction to cage door opening: Swoop pauses and lip licks. Reaction to touch: Swoop rubs her cheeks against the cage furnishings then leans forward to sniff the assessor. She jerks back, lip licks then shifts away to the back of the cage. She vocalizes when touched then quickly whips around hisses and bats at the assessor’s hand when pet along her back. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lively VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Bold POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Pet-induced aggression – Initially Swoop solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to hiss and swat at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Swoop becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Swoop solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to Swoop becoming agitated with a lot of physical contact we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
