04/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Sweet Tart was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Required net to handle, ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/26/17 Crouched in back of kennel with wide eyes and ears tilted. He avoids my gaze and looks around the room when I speak to him, then hisses at the bear-claw as it approaches him. The hiss becomes a low whine and growl, and he watches the claw with wide eyes and mouth open – growling and whining – until it leaves his line of vision. Not ready for further interaction today, he’s very uncomfortable. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Sweet Tart was relaxed and lying down at the back of her kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sweet Tart turns towards the assessor and slow blinks. Her ears rotate and she doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Sweet Tart hisses then shifts away. Reaction to touch: Sweet Tart presses her body up against the back of the kennel and watches the assessor with wide, dilated eyes. She flinches when touched then quickly jumps back with flattened ears and raises her paw up as a warning. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Sweet Tart has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Sweet Tart is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
