06/04/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Sunshine was brought into our care center as a stray, so there is no previous history available. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Shy, tense, used towel to cover face during exam. Allowed all handling. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/01/17 Lying towards center of kennel, eyes wide and feet folded. He stands up when I open the kennel door and vocalizes. He comes forward curiously to sniff my hand and shrinks back whenever I try to touch him. He goes in like he’s going to head-butt my hand, then tilts his ears and leans away. Vocalizes and walks to the other side of his kennel when pet. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Sunshine is lying in the back of the kennel with a tense body and ears tilted as the assessor approaches. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sunshine makes eye contact when spoken to, then looks away. Reaction to cage door opening: Sunshine chirps and tilts his ears forward when the cage door opens. His body relaxes. Reaction to touch: Sunshine stands up and raises his tail when touched. He turns his head to look back at the assessor’s hand with continued petting, then retreats through his portal door. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Sunshine has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent Sunshine tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
