BEHAVIOR:
Sunshine’s previous owner reports she is shy and fearful around strangers. She has lived with children and was very scared of them, often running away and hiding from them. She has never been around other cats or dogs. She does not mind having her coat brushed, but does not like being picked up or held. She was described as friendly, but is shy and fearful. She has a medium activity level and will mostly keep to herself.
Reaction to assessor: Sunshine was crouched over inside her litter box upon approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Sunshine blinks and feint sleeps.
Reaction to cage door opening: Sunshine becomes alert and looks around her surroundings.
Reaction to touch: Sunshine sniffs the assessor’s hand and remains in place to accept petting. She slowly relaxes and leans in for petting. Her tail is wrapped close to her body, but her body remains soft.
Reaction to being picked up: Sunshine becomes tense, but remains calm when held.
Sunshine’s previous owner reports she has been urinating outside her litter box lately. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. The owner believes it was caused due to stress. We recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment.
Behavior Determination: Experience
Sunshine tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
Owner Surrender:
Basic information:
Sunshine is a 4 year old female domestic short hair mix. The owner surrendered Sunshine because she is not getting along with her children (would run and constantly hide from them). Sunshine has no health problems and the owner has not taken her to a vet.
Socialization:
The owner states that around strangers Sunshine is Shy and fearful. Sunshine has lived with children between the ages of 6 and 10 years old, but she is very scared of the and will often run and hide from them. She has never been around dogs or other cat’s so the owner has no idea how Sunshine would react around them. Sunshine has never bitten or scratched anyone.
Behavior:
Sunshine has been bathed but is scared of water and has never had her nails trimmed. She does not mind having his coat brushed, but does not like being picked up or being placed in a cat carrier (will struggle and attempt to flee.
For a new family to know:
The owner describes Sunshine as friendly but shy and fearful cat with a medium activity level. Sunshine has never played with toys; she lives mostly indoors and sleeps anywhere in the house that he wants (mostly hides under the bed). In the home Sunshine will follow keep to herself and does not to seek attention. Sunshine eats various brands of brand dry and wet cat food and is feed two times a day. She is litter box trained and uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter, however lately she has been peeing outside the litter box (the owner thinks the cat maybe stressed). Sunshine has never been given a scratching post so the owner does not know if she will use it or not.
Behavior during intake:
During intake Sunshine was somewhat tense with stiff body, she allowed us to scan (-) put on collar, photographed and placed in cat kennel.
