***SAFE 12/10/17*** STERLING was hoping for a home so she followed someone all the way to their house. Instead of letting her stay they dropped her off at the shelter. Sterling is about 6 yrs old and already spayed. She may be a lost pet. Please help this girl have a home for the holidays!
BROOKLYN CENTER
Hello, my name is Sterling. My animal id is #15245. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 02-Dec-2017.
ZIP Code From: 11233
Sterling is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult Only determination). Sterling is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. She accepts petting but will whip around, hiss and swat when pet for an extended period of time. Afterwards she keeps her eyes focused on you then slowly starts to relax. This behavior is very difficult to manage in the care center.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/03/17 At front of kennel as I approach. Hisses once, then vocalizes softly. She remains in front of her kennel and allows soft petting along her head and body while leaning in, tail raised and quivering. Turns head and hisses after a few more passes along her body. Conflicted behavior – needs some time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 12/04/17 At front of kennel, vocalizing and head-butting the kennel door. She remains in front of her kennel as the cage door opens and tolerates petting along her head and body with the bear-claw, leaning in and raising her tail. She then turns her head to watch my hand and vocalizes when it passes along her lower back. She swats at my hand and stress meows when I switch from the bear-claw to my hand and continue to pet her along her back. May be showing signs of petting induced aggression. Need some more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Sterling was relaxed and chirping near the front of the cage.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Sterling continues vocalizing and rubs her cheeks against the kennel door.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Sterling remains calm and relaxed.
Reaction to touch:: Sterling sniffs the assessor’s hand and accepts petting on her head and along her body. Her tail thrashes around and she quickly whips around and hisses when pet for an extended period of time. She swats at the assessor, then lip licks and keeps her eyes focused on all movements. She slowly starts to relax then goes back to soliciting attention.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Affectionate
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation
Potential challenges comments:: Sterling is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Sterling becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sterling solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to Sterling becoming overstimulated with prolonged interactions, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
