Star is a one year old Torbie cat. The owner’s other cat gave birth to Star and he has had her for around a year. He is surrendering Star due to her being pregnant and unable to care for her and her kittens. She has no injuries or health problems that the owner is aware of.
Star is fearful of new people and may hide. She has not been around dogs or children. She lived peacefully with 3 male unneutered cats and an unspayed female. She has not bitten a person or another animal.
Owner stated she does not have any behavioral problems and uses the litterbox well. He has never given her a bath, trimmed her nails, or brushed her coat. She struggled to be placed in a carrier.
Star is described as a mellow and shy cat. Her energy level is pretty low and she spends most of her time sleeping on the couch. SHe was kept indoors only and was not given any toys to play with. She was free fed dry food and given an uncovered litterbox with clay. SHe was not given a scratching post and did not have a scratching post.

Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor: Star was resting on her blanket near the back of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to: Star looks over at the assessor with wide eyes then rolls over on her side.
Reaction to cage door opening: Star lip licks and slowly looks around the kennel.
Reaction to touch: Star was hesitant when first approached, grumbled then leaned away from the assessor’s hand. She slowly warms up to touch and gently leans in allowing rubs on her cheeks. She stays in place and occasionally focuses on the assessor’s hand when pet along her back.
Reaction to being picked up: Star backs away and avoids being picked up.
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Fearful – Star has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Experienced, adult home only – Star tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
