04/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Ross was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Nervous, allowed all handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/05/17 Low body posture with a healing wound on his nose. Looks pretty nervous, starts stress meowing when spoken to softly. Shifts weight, leans away when the door opens. Has a very tense body, tolerates petting and attention. Offered him some treats but he wouldn’t eat them until I leave. Needs some time to adjust. Sprayed feliway EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Sparta lying down flat at the back of the kennel with his head facing the wall. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sparta seems a little apprehensive and remains frozen at the back. Reaction to cage door opening: Sparta shifts away to the other side of his double kennel. Reaction to touch: Sparta stress meows and his eyes dart around the kennel when the assessor extends his hand out. He closes his eyes when touched and tolerates petting briefly before shifting away and retreating in his litter box. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Sparta has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Sparta tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
