07/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Softy was brought into our care center as a stray so there is no past history available. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: TIMID DOES NOT TOLERATE TOUCHING EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Softy is sitting in the back of the kennel with a tense body, ears tilted as the assessor approaches. Reaction when softly spoken to: Softy remains low in the back of her kennel and sniffs the air when spoken to. Reaction to cage door opening: Softy shifts her weight and retreats to her litterbox with her body low and tail down as the cage door opens. Reaction to touch: Softly hisses and strikes the assessor’s hand multiple times as it reaches towards her. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Un-assessable at this time. VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful Softy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner Softy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat / scratch / bite / is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
