02/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Indoor only Previously lived with: Adults, 7yr old child and a Chihuahua Behavior toward children: Very gentle and doesn’t play Behavior toward strangers: Friendly but mostly keeps to himself Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed and respectful, mostly keeps to himself. Bite history: None Scratch history: None Litter box training: “Yes, but has been having accidents daily” Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, mellow, and affectionate with a medium activity level Other notes: He isn’t bother by being held or placed into the carrier. EVALUATION: 02/21/17 Curled up at back of kennel, quiet, relaxed, watches me with soft eyes. Has been using litter box appropriately. Allows me to give him some head rubs, but didn’t want a lot of addtl touching or handling, clearly let me know this. Kind of a grumpy old guy, in an endearing way. Doesn’t like the Friskies pate he was given, likes the Meow Mix wet I offered, ate that right away. Left some treats. 02/22/17 Lets you know he’s hungry! Meows and meows for attention, has a good strong voice; otherwise, he’s undemanding, calm, enjoys a good blanket and taking it easy. Looks yonger than 15yo. Right at the front when I open cage door, appreciates head rubs, lifts up into my hands for more. Starts eating as soon as I place a bowl of fresh wet in front of him. Gave a new toy and some treats. 02/23/17 At front of kennel, letting me know he’s hungry. I first give him a small fabric toy that had been seeped in catnip and he starts playing with it, showing a youthful enthusiasm. Bounces up and to me when I offer a plate of fresh food, eats right away. Let’s me give headrubs while he’s eating, lifts up into the touching. Not too keen on being pet anywhere but his head, doesn’t like to be picked up. He’s a nice old grumpy charmer; mayn’t want you on his lawn but he will love to sit and watch TV and eat some chow with you. Gave some treats. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Allowed initial handling but began to hiss and swat ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Calm, Sweet, Affectionate
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Inappropriate elimination- Socks previous owners report that he was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box daily. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. _x_ Uncomfortable with pick up- Socks did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking him up, especially while he is still adjusting to his new home. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Experienced cat parent- Socks may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
