**SAFE 07/11/17 ** A volunteer writes: “I am a beautiful grey cat with perfectly proportioned facial features and a model physique. What’s really special is my incredibly cute nose and whiskers. My fur is extra soft! While some might think I’m mysterious, I am loving and snuggly.” **RETURNED FROM ADOPTION – AGAIN!!*** SMOKEY IS BACK AT THE SHELTER IN LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER BEING ADOPTED AGAIN. WE SEEM TO THINK THAT THESE ADOPTERS SHOULD GET A STUFFED ANIMAL RATHER THAN A SHELTER PET. POOR SMOKEY NEEDS A FUREVER HOME – NOT AN UNTIL HOME. WHO OUT THERE IS WILLING TO ADOPT THIS HANDSOME BOY WHO IS FRIENDLY AND EASY GOING?? SMOKEY MUST BE RESERVED BY A LEGITIMATE ADOPTER, BY NOON TOMORROW!

06/28/17 14:21 The owner stated that Smokey was destructive in the household and scratched/bit him but did not draw blood. When the owner tried picking Smokey up, he would relax for a short while and then begin hissing and scratching at him. Upon intake, Smokey allowed being collared and all other handling. Smokey walked willingly into his transport carrier. Smokey had a centered body and dilated pupils. Smokey scanned positive for a microchip.

07/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Smokey was returned for nipping and scratching his recent adopter. These incidents have not broken skin, but the owner reports they would pick him up and put him on their lap, which Smokey does not seem to enjoy. Due to little information provided by the adopter, we are using profile information given to us by his first owner. Lived Indoors Previously lived with: 2 adults and children ages 9-12 years old Behavior toward strangers: Relaxed, outgoing, and respectful Behavior toward children: Relaxed, outgoing, and respectful Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Respectful and tolerant Bite or Scratch history: History of nipping and scratching Litter box training: Yes, uses an hooded litter box MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – easy going, allows all handling EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Smokey was lying down on top of shelf, calm and relaxed. Reaction when softly spoken to: Smokey gets up and reaches out, gently patting the assessor’s hand. Reaction to cage door opening: Smokey looks around and remains calm and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Smokey sniffs the assessor’s and gently grabs the assessor’s hand with both his front paws, using nails lightly to bring the assessor’s hand into his mouth and nips very gently. He accepts gentle petting on his head, but quickly grabs the assessor’s hand again and places it inside his mouth, applying more pressure the second time. Whenever petting is done, he grabs the assessor’s hand and applies more pressure. He remains calm and nips very slowly, but continues to apply increasing pressure if petting is attempted. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Curious, Bold RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult only home -Smokey doesn’t appear to mind being around people, but he uses his paw to direct people’s hands into his mouth during interactions. We are unsure if this behavior is motivated by play or if he nips as a warning to let the person know he isn’t ready to be touched. He has otherwise remained calm and relaxed when approached for interactions in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
