05/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Smokey was brought in without information on his behavior in his previous home. The counselor was able to place him inside a carrier during intake, but he began to hiss and display teeth afterwards. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Striking growling spitting. Hard to exam even in net. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/14/17 Lying in litterbox with a low body, face hidden behind litterbox. Tolerates petting along head and body with ears flattened all the way down. Shifts weight in box. Not interested in treats today. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Smokey was lying low inside of his litter box, squeezing his head against the wall of the box and trying to hide. Reaction when softly spoken to: Smokey’s ears tilt sideways and he doesn’t turn to look at the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Smokey remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Smokey flinches when touched gently and hisses hard. His ears flatten against his head and he starts to growl loudly. When the assessor removes their hand, he nuzzles his head against the box again and continues to hide. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Cannot evaluate RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Smokey is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
