Smokey is a 5 year old neutered male that has no previous or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner had Smokey for 5 years but had to surrender due to pet conflict

How is this cat around strangers?
When a stranger would come to the owners home, Smokey would approach the person and rub against their legs
How is this cat around children?
Owner did not have any children in the home but when friends or family members would come to the home with children of all ages, Smokey would come out of hiding for a few minutes to look around who was in the home and then go hide
How is this cat around other cats?
Owner had 4 other neutered male cats in the home. He was friendly and respectful with one of the male cats but around the other 3 cats, Smokey would hiss and swat at them if they approached him.
How is this cat around dogs?
Owner did not have any dogs in the home so behavior is unknown
Behavior Notes
Smokey is not bothered when someone brushes his coat, or being disturbed while sleeping. When someone would try to trim his nails, he would hiss, swat and bite. Owner has never tried to bathe him so behavior is unknown. When owner would try to pick Smokey up and hold him or put him into a carrier, he would struggle to run away

For a New Family to Know
Smokey is described as mellow, confident, assertive, independent and quiet. He has a medium activity level and likes to play with bottle caps and go into his cat tunnel. Smokey was kept indoors only and is litter box trained. In the home, he used a hooded litter box with clumping litter. Smokey had a scratching post made of rough rope and cardboard that he would use frequently. He was fed dry food only brand Science Diet Vitality.
Behavior Notes:
Behavior during intake: Smokey had a tense body, eyes dilated. When counselor approached his carrier, he began to hiss. Counselor was able to transfer from one carrier to another and scan for a microchip but unable to collar due to animal hissing.
