09/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Slinky was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tried to attack in carrier so was sedated for PE and procedures ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/07/17 Lying in litter box, body low. Ears are flat. Hisses and strikes when pet along the body. Uncomfortable – needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Slinky was curled up in the back of the cage with his tail wrapped at his side. Reaction when softly spoken to: Slinky slow blinks and remains completely motionless. Reaction to cage door opening: Slinky is tense and alert. Reaction to touch: Slinky’s ears bend flat, he arches his back and hisses when approached. He seems very uncomfortable, displays distance increasing behaviors and currently doesn’t allow any handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Slinky has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Slinky is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
