07/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Simpkin was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. Her finder stated she is fearful and attempts to run. Although she was fearful during intake, she allowed the counselor to handle her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Nervous, vocal, resists medical handling and tries to escape ENRICHMENT NOTES: 7/16/17 Curled up with siblings. Woke and became alert when door opened, but seemed lethargic. Leaned away, but tolerated ouch and pickup. Seemed uncomfortable, but too sick to really respond. 7/17/17 Dozing with siblings, woke and retreated when door opened. Held still and allowed pets when touched. Squirmed when first picked up, but calmed when held for a bit. Retreated when put back. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Simpkin looks at the assessor with almond-shaped eyes, curled up next to siblings. Reaction when softly spoken to: Simpkin continues to look at the assessor and blinks softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Simpkin becomes alert and shifts her body, appearing like she wanted to flee. Reaction to touch: Simpkin ducks her head and shifts forward, but stays in place and accepts petting. She seems unsure during the interaction, but will lean in for cheek rubs and begins to purr. When petting stops, she leaps into her other kennel space, but will peek through the portal hole. Reaction to being picked up: Simpkin is slightly tense during pick up, but allows handling. After a moment, she wiggles to be placed back down. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Kitten socialization – Simpkin is a young kitten that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent – Simpkin tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
