09/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Curious, Timid KNOWN HISTORY: Simon was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment. His finder reports he meowed and came close to her and rubbed his body on her legs. During intake, Simon had a very soft body. Meowed softly when picked up from his carrier, took treats and allowed petting. He allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/7/17- Observed Behavior – hissing during exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 09/07/17 Sitting by the front with dilated eyes, but perks up when spoken to and starts to purr. He reaches out gently for attention, but is a bit cautious when cage door opens. He leans in for petting and rubs his cheeks against the assessor. He places paw onto the assessors shoulders and continues to rub. Social cat, but may get easily overstimulated with prolonged interactions. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Simon was lying down, calm and relaxed upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Simon looks at the assessor with soft eyes and approaches the front. Reaction to cage door opening: Simon remains soft and relaxed, chirping attention. Reaction to touch: Simon moderately nips then leans in to the assessor’s hand. He paws after some petting, but will allow the assessor to stroke him gently on his head with some coaxing. He slowly leans in for cheek rubs while his body remains soft with tail slightly down. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Simon solicits attention and tolerates petting, but may play roughly. He is a young and high-energy kitten that tends to put his teeth on skin and/or swipe without retracting claws. Although this appears to be typical kitten behavior and motivated by play, it is important to note that this behavior occurs and that he may also be easily overstimulated. We recommend daily rigorous play with fishing pole-type toys and ending play sessions before Simon becomes overstimulated or if he begins to target human hands or feet. We also recommend using puzzle feeders to keep Simon engaged and to exercise his brain in addition to his body.
