08/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Simba was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: was nervous, low, tense, with ears back but tolerated all medical handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/13/17 Lying In back of kennel with a tense body. He comes forward to sniff my hand and allows petting along his head, leaning in gently. He turns his head and hisses when my hand passes along his back. 08/14/17 Sitting crouched in back of kennel. Makes eye contact and hisses as I open the kennel door, ears flattening down. I give him a treat which he eats, then click and reward him each time he comes forward and sniffs my hand. I stop the session when he hisses and swats towards my hand. This is after about a minute of clicker training. He’s had enough. Tolerates petting with the bear-claw while retreating towards the portal with a low body, tail down. Turns head and hisses when pet along the back, paw raising. 08/15/17 Hiding underneath the bogus paper. Shifts around when spoken to softly; doesn’t come out. He flinches when the door opens and retreats to the other side of the double kennel. Low body posture, tense & alert. His ears flatten and he starts breathing more rapidly when I extend my hand forward. He squints when touched and tolerates petting on his head as long as you go slow. He watches me closely and follows my hand when touched along his back. Appears very uncomfortable & hisses when he’s had enough . Needs a hidey box or kuranda bed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Simba has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Simba tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
