***SAFE 06/09/17***HEALTHY, NEUTERED FIVE YEAR OLD SIMBA was brought in as a stray and is not taking it well – he is upset and needs rescue asap .Owner described him as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, and quiet with a medium activity level. Owner stated he plays fetch and likes to give kisses.

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 05/19/2017 from NY 10026, owner surrender reason stated was BITEPEOPLE.

Simba A1112564 is at risk due to behavior. Simba prefers to be left alone. Will become alert when approached and focus on the assessor. Allows brief petting, but quickly becomes agitated and will swat multiple times while hissing.

05/19/17 20:31 socialization Around strangers, Simba is friendly and shy for a few minutes by warming up first and then goes up to them. He has spent time with toddlers and is respectful with them. He plays exuberant with adults and somewhat rough with children. He has spent time with other cats and is respectful with them but did not play with them. He has a scratch history with a person. There is no scratch history with another animal. Behavior Owner stated there are no behavior issues that they are really concerned about. He sleeps in the car ride.There are no litterbox accidents and urinates in the toilet. Owner has not tried given him a bath or trimming his nails. He isnt bothered with brushing of coat. he enjoys picking up and holding. He struggles when being placed in carrier. For the new family to know Owner described him as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, and quiet with a medium activity level. Owner stated he plays fetch and likes to give kisses. Simba plays with anything he can get his paws on. He sleeps in the owners bed and eat both wet and dry food friskies. He uses a uncovered litterbox with clumping litter. KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Shy for a few minutes, but warms up and goes up to them Behavior toward children: Respectful, but plays somewhat rough Behavior toward cats: Respectful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Has a scratch history with people Litter box training: Yes, uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter Energy level/descriptors: Owner described him as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, and quiet with a medium activity level. Other notes: Owner stated he plays fetch and likes to give kisses. Simba plays with anything he can get his paws on. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – striking, hissing, growling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 5/21/17 In den on approach, started growling when door opened. Retreated further inside, hissed, struck den wall when offered assess-a-hand. 5/23/17 Sitting up next to den again, eyes dilated. Started hissing, spitting, and charging cage front when cover was lifted. Continued charging even after cover was lowered again. 5/25/17 Sitting at front again today, eyes dilated, stiff posture, looking around. Hissed when spoken to, eyes became even more dilated. Started growling and lunging when shown assess-a-hand, but pulled his swats and didn’t make contact. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Simba becomes alert and hunches over on top of den with his tail wrapped tightly against his body. Reaction when softly spoken to: Simba looks at the assessor and blinks, but the end of his tail flicks. Reaction to cage door opening: Simba becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Simba grumbles and focuses on the assessor. His tail thumps harder as the assessor’s hand extends and doesn’t allow contact; he hisses hard and lifts his paw, ready to swat. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Bold RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Simba is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely uncomfortable in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. He also has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
