Hello, my name is Simba. My animal id is #17589. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 03-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit – too many animals already.

Simba is at risk for behavior reasons. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Medically, we have no concerns for Simba at this time, who presents as a healthy cat.

Simba was very stiff bodied during intake he was hissing and swatting when we approached him and did not allow us to handle him at all. When we tried to give him food he would just let out a low growl and arch his back.

Basic Information:: Simba is a male orange and white tabby that is estimated to be 5 years old. His previous owner red him at home and gave him to a friend who was later unable to keep him due to personal reasons the original owner took him back and had too many animals a home so he was unable to keep Simba as well.

How is this cat around strangers?: Simba is fearful and aggressive toward strangers. He will run and hide and if approached he will swat at people.
How is this cat around children?: Simba was not around children in his previous home.
How is this cat around other cats?: Simba was not around cats in his previous home.
How is this cat around dogs?: Simba was not around dogs in his previous home.
Behavior Notes: Simba tends to hide in fear and at times will scratch at furniture.
Bite history:: Simba has no history of having bitten another person or animal.

For a New Family to Know: Simba is an independent cat that will stay hidden around the house. He doesn’t like to play with cat toys and is used to being indoors all day. He refers dry cat food. Simba is litter box trained and prefers an uncovered litter box.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: an adult Behavior toward strangers: Simba is fearful and aggressive toward strangers. He will run and hide and if approached he will swat at people. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior: Attempts to flee once, allows full exam today
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/4/18 Curled up in litter box, head down, eyes dilated, ears sideways. Lowered head and hid face when door opened. Briefly sniffed treats, but didn’t eat. Tolerated head pets, flinched badly and flattened completely into litter box when pet along body. Seems terrified. 1/7/18 Curled up in litter box, eyes fully dilated, whiskers forward. Became very focused on me on approach, put ears sideways. Flinched hard when door opened. Sniffed treats, but didn’t eat. Curled up tighter and hid face when pet. Flinched again when door closed. Still seems terrified.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Simba remains tense, crouched position hiding in the cage cubby during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Simba becomes alert with an intense stare.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Simba immediately strikes, increases distance, and hisses at the assessor’s hand.
Reaction to touch:: Unable to perform do to behavior.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Simba is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
