Brooklyn Center
Hello, my name is Simba. My animal id is #17397. I am a desexed male orange tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 31-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as not a fit – too many animals already.
Simba is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult Only determination). Simba has been fearful in care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior. Simba is uncomfortable with petting and handling.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Simba was brought in without information on his behavior history or tendencies in a home environment.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Low growl, tense on approach, once out of cage allowed all handling
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Simba was tense and crouched in the back of the kennel with wide eyes focused on the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Simba slow blinks at the assessor and remains motionless.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Simba arches his back and starts to low growl.
Reaction to touch:: Simba’s ears bend flat, he leans and starts growling when approached. He seems very uncomfortable, but tolerates slow, gentle petting on his head. He lip licks, continues growling and slowly turns his head to follow the assessor’s movements.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Simba has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Simba tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
