SHABBA – 21550
Safe - 3-4-2018 Manhattan Rescue: Feline Rescue of SI Please honor your pledges: http://felinerescueofstatenisland.org/donation/
***SAFE 03/04/18*** SHABBA was brought to the shelter by owner and needs a new home. Shabba has some dental disease but presents as an otherwise healthy cat. Shabba did very well behaviorally for his initial medical exam but has, unfortunately, not adjusted well to shelter life after that. Shabba comes from a home with many other cats in it and would benefit from finding a new place that is quiet and will let him come out of his shell in his own time.

Hissed, growled when door opened, leaned away to avoid touch. 2/27/18 Still in den, started growling when door opened. Poked head out to hiss when offered treats, then withdrew out of reach of touch. Poked head out again after door close, very tense, started lip licking, quickly withdrew again. 2/28/18 Still in den, facing out window, wide-eyed, alert. Started whining and lip licking when door opened, put ears sideways. Sniffed assess-a-hand, leaned away from touch. No hissing today! 3/01/18 Inside den, peering out from holes with dilated eyes. He focuses on me intensely when spoken to and starts to hiss and growl. He hisses when my hand extends toward him and retreats further into the den when petting was attempted. Eats treats when offered, but focuses on me from time to time and growls. Needs more positive reinforcement.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Shabba remains tense, crouched position hiding in the cat den.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Shabba becomes alert with pupils dilated, peaking from the cat den.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Shabba is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
