04/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Scrabble was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Shy, tense, warms up somewhat after being out of cage. Allows all handling. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/25/17 Hiding under torn up bogus paper in back of kennel. Sitting in a crouched position when I lift the paper, ears flattened and tail wrapped around her. She makes eye contact and watches me as I reach towards her, tolerating petting along her head and body with flat ears and accelerated breathing. Frightened – needs more time to adjust. Gave hidey box and sprayed 04/27/17 Lying wrapped up in blanket. She retreats to the back when I uncover her, eyes wide and body low. She avoids my touch by retreating with every attempt. She tolerates petting for the few seconds I’m able to touch her, but is insistent on trying to avoid contact today. 04/29/17 Not using her hidey box, lying completely flat in her litter box. Doesn’t really react when spoken to softly. Seems stressed, flinches when the door opens. She closes her eyes and tolerates petting then slowly turns her head away. Wasn’t interested in treats (chicken or temptations). Nervous little girl, tries to avoid contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Scrabble has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Scrabble tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
